Now you’ve read the Blog, and about the Somerset Speaks project, why not sign up to take part? I need people from Somerset to take part in my research into Somerset dialect, and I reckon you’re just darn perfect!
- Living in Somerset?
- Have lived in Somerset most of your life?
- Over the age of 18?
If the answer to these questions is ‘YES’, then I would very much like to meet you! You could also win a £50 Marks and Spencer gift voucher for taking part.
I’m investigating how the dialect(s) in Somerset have changed over the past 6o years, and I need your help to do that. In order to make a comparison with data gathered during the Survey of English Dialects, I hope to interview and record as many people as possible from Somerset over the next two years. Once I’ve done that, I hope to be able to produce a map that shows if language has changed, where it’s changed, and what could have caused those changes to occur.
It’s a big project, which is why it’s going to take me two years to interview as many people as I can from 3 key locations across the county: West Somerset; Sedgemoor/Mendip; and South Somerset.
The interview will take approximately 30 minutes and will be recorded. In some cases, depending on the location, you have the option of your recording going into an archive for future use as an ‘oral history’. This means that you will be making your mark, and creating an invaluable resource for future historians, linguists, sociologists… (the list goes on!) who want to see what life was like across Somerset in the early 21st Century.
What’s more, all participants in this research will be entered into a free prize draw to win a £50 Marks and Spencer gift card. The draw will take place in December 2017, so just in time for Christmas! You can also gain more chances to take part by nominating people to take part in the research. For every nominee you provide who meets the criteria and completes an interview, you will gain an extra chance in the draw.
So, do you want to take part? If you’re interested, or would just like to find out more, please fill in this short form, and I will get in touch with you.
